WEDNESDAY EVENING POST FOR SEPTEMBER 8, 2010

Hey All!

Happy Hump Day and welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Evening Post!  I've got lots to show, so off we go. . .

I have a question for you. . .when you create cards, do you come up with your own design most of the time, or do you use other cards you see on blogs or sites like SCS for inspiration?  I tend to do the latter.  I see a card and I think  "Wow! that is such a great idea. . ."  Then I go and make a similar card based on the idea, but making my own personal creative changes to make it my own.  Well this card is one of those.  Here is my card:

You can see the inspiration card HERE.  There are so many techniques used on this card.  There is paper piecing (shell and poppy flowers) colored pencils and oms, sponging (sky and ground/grass), Flower Soft, and paper punching (grass MS and dragonfly).  When I saw the inspiration card, I thought it was cute, but a little plain for my style.  I used several stamp sets to pick the background flora.  I made this card for a neighbor who made us dinner for the day of Jay's surgery so I wouldn't have to cook that night.  Such thoughtfulness. . .

The next card is for Halloween (what a surprise huh? LOL).  Again, I saw a card that I used as my inspiration.  Here is my card. . .

The link to the inspiration card is HERE.  Once again, I've used the house image from the PTI set called Boards and Beams.  It is so versatile.  I combined several stamp sets for this one.  The tree is from Memory Box, the grave stones are from Hampton Arts, the bats are from a $ stamp, and the sentiment is from Hampton Arts.  I sponged the night sky using various Ranger distress inks and colored the house with colored pencils and oms.  The tree and house shadowing were done with a grey colored pencil.  I made the stars with a silver gel pen.

My last "show and tell" is a set of Halloween cards that I made from a newly purchased cheap stamp set. Take a look:

This is a stamp set from Recollections.  Their stamp sets sell for $6.99 at Michael's, but I used a 40% off on it so, what a deal.  The "boo" is by High Hopes.  I colored them with colored pencils and oms.  All the paper is from my scrap bin.  These were quick to make and I really like how they turned out.  The inside says "Have a Monstrous Halloween" which is computer generated.

OK, that's it for this edition.  I hope it was worth your time taking a look.  I'm off to look at your blogs for the next couple of days, and as always, can't wait to see what you've created in the last week.  Thanks for stopping by!

Hugs to all of you!  Don't forget the "Pic of the Week" below!

Best,

Curt O'Brien

Hi Curt, Love your cards. The snail card is so cute and you have put a lot of work into it. All worth it! Yes I get my inspiration from others' cards and probably more so from sketches and colour challenges. Usually though I start making a card and it ends up going a totally different direction from the card I was inspired by!

lol...was going to email you this afternoon and remind you that it's Weds., and got sidetracked! LOVE the new picture of the boys - they are such big furry hams!!! Your creations tonight all make me smile. I love what you added to the snail inspiration card. You're right, the original was a jump off point, as you usually add more 'stuff' than that! Love the hauned house too :) My jump up and down favorite tonight though, has to be the fun set of goofy monsters! Gotta look for them - they are too sweet! Thanks for the heads up that Michael's has them. Great post tonight, sir! I'm travelin' with my handsome man this week - working side by side, so I've posted a bit, but not as much as I'd like. I'll play catch-up on Friday!!! Have a great weekend, and hope to see you soon! Hi to Jay and the mom's, and of course, the ginormous furballs!

Wow you have been busy...I have to say you have such thoughtful neighbors, but you are a real gem also. I love to see others still give cards to neighbors.
You always add so many great spins to your cards. That monster set is just adorable.

Wonderful creations! My favorite is the one with the house - I love the way you combined so many different stamps. I get a lot of inspiration from your blog as well as many others, and rarely have an original idea any more. I've thought of going cold turkey on blurfing, just to see if I have an mojo of my own left, but it made me twitch just to think of it. I don't like to twitch.

Wonderful cards, that Halloween house is my favorite though, just so much cool detail!! Like all the different techniques on the thank you card, too...and those monster cards, they just have to make you smile and the inside sentiment is perfect....I don't case cards much, I should though, I usally case a technique more...and seem to be doing a ton of challenges for some reason, though lately I haven't done much...been dabbling in brayering, though I need lots more practice!
The new pic of "the boys" is great...they still remind me a bit of Nellie...such handsome babies!!!

Wonderful cards Curt! LOVE those little monsters, they're great! As to you question, unless it's a sketch challenge, my designs are my own. OR, like in the last HM challenge, I loved a sketch I had done from the week before, so I used that in the challenge.

They are all absolutely fantastic!! Love all the techniques on the first card. The second card with the spooky house just looks like I could go touch it in real life....great work on that! And I think you chose the perfect papers to go behind those little monsters in that card set. The purple one is really cool!

Love the cards, especially the Halloween ones. That is my favorite day of the year! I need that house image...lovin' it! Your pic of the week is great.
I sometimes use others ideas but I do try to come up with some of my own. Sometimes I just can't think and then I'll see something on a blog that I need to try. Isn't it nice to have wonderful neighbors? I don't know what I'd do without mine.

Hi Curt!!! I am always excited to see your posts - I love your work! The first one is so darling - that snail and all the pretty flowers paper pieced and all . . . but my favorite is the spooky house! OMG - it's amazing!!!!! Gravestones, the completely full moon - a few stars out (or something else ... ooooooo) Yes, it's a winner! The monster cards are very cute - but I'm so stuck on the scary house one!

I'm glad you have neighbors who watch over you - I think that might be exactly what you wrote in my blog last week. It's true for both of us. We are blessed.

Hugs!

Hi Curt,
Just wanted to stop by and thank you for visiting me and leaving such a sweet comment. But Holy Schmolely! YOU are the one with the fab blog and amazing cards!!! How is it that I've never been here before? LOVE your sweet dogs and their great names too :) To answer your question, I mostly just do what ever I want when making cards, but that unfortunately, makes me do the same thing over and over...Not a huge fan of sketches tho, and sometimes when I've come across a great idea and I try and do my own thing, it's a miserable failure..lol. Have a great weekend!

Hi curt, I put off opening your blog...I had to put my big furry guy, Murphy, down the other day. But, I decided I wanted to see your duo and all your great work in hopes it would cheer me up. The little Halloween cards did! Then, I saw the butterflies - I let our basset out later that day and out in the garden had to be at least 30-50 Monarch butterflies that were migrating south. They stopped to feast on our flowers. What a sight and then your photograph to boot! It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make. Wishing you and the boys lots of hugs! Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
